M.P. Shah Hospital Breaks Silence on SHA Suspension

M.P. Shah Hospital has issued a statement following the Social Health Authority’s (SHA) decision to suspend its contract for the provision of services to SHA/SHIF beneficiaries, pending investigations into alleged billing complaints.

In its response issued on Wednesday, June 24, the hospital confirmed receipt of the suspension notice from SHA and stated that it would fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

The facility noted that it takes the allegations seriously, emphasizing that every patient deserves access to appropriate care without undue financial burden.

It added that corrective measures would be taken if any wrongdoing is identified.

M.P. Shah Hospital further indicated that it has initiated an internal review alongside SHA’s investigation to establish the facts surrounding the complaints.

The hospital assured that it is working to support affected patients, including facilitating safe transfers to other SHA-contracted healthcare facilities where necessary to ensure continuity of care.

It also stated that its medical teams remain available to assist patients who may be impacted by the suspension during the transition period.

Earlier, the Social Health Authority informed the public that beneficiaries would not be able to access services at M.P. Shah Hospital under the national health insurance scheme during the suspension period.

SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi confirmed that the hospital is under investigation, though the specific details of the probe were not disclosed.

She added that the suspension, which took effect on Tuesday, June 23, affects multiple funding schemes, including the Primary Healthcare Fund, Social Health Insurance Fund, Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund, and the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund.

However, SHA clarified that patients already admitted before the suspension would continue receiving care until discharge, while new admissions and other services would need to be sought at alternative contracted facilities.
