Liverpool disregarded Pep Guardiola’s stern warning about lower-league teams, suffering a surprising 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup fourth round.
After Manchester City’s hard-fought 2-1 victory against Leyton Orient, and following Chelsea’s elimination by Brighton, Pep Guardiola warned about the unpredictability of cup ties.
His message proved prophetic, as Liverpool’s failure to heed that advice saw Arne Slot’s side dumped out of the competition by a spirited Championship side.
Guardiola’s City side had struggled against the League One, needing a late goal from Kevin De Bruyne to avoid an upset.
After that match he praised Orient’s resilience and emphasized how no team can take a lower-league opponent lightly. The City boss issued a warning:
“We played a really good game, it was a typical FA Cup game – that’s why this competition is unbelievable.”
Arne Slot acknowledged the challenge before kick-off, noting that lower-league teams often treat these matches as cup finals.
However, his side struggled to break down a resolute Plymouth defense despite dominating possession with 73 percent of the ball.
The Reds managed just four shots on target and failed to convert their chances, while Plymouth capitalized on one of few opportunities to secure a historic win.
The game’s only goal came in the 53rd minute when Plymouth was awarded a penalty following a handball by Harvey Elliott.
Ryan Hardie stepped up and converted from the spot, securing Plymouth’s much needed victory as and a further step into the fifth round of the FA CUP.
Slot’s side won seven corners and had multiple opportunities to equalize, but a combination of poor finishing and a determined Plymouth defense saw them leave Home Park empty-handed.
The result ends Liverpool’s hopes of a quadruple and focus now switches back to the Premier League title challenge and a clash against Merseyside rivals Everton on Wednesday.
