Linda Mwananchi Website Pulled Down Following Major Cyber Attacks

The newly launched Linda Mwananchi website has been temporarily taken offline after experiencing a series of suspected cyber attacks targeting the platform.

The site, which had attracted thousands of sign-ups shortly after its launch, came under scrutiny online after screenshots allegedly showing users’ personal information began circulating on social media, raising concerns about data security.

In a statement on Saturday, March 14, Edwin Sifuna confirmed that the platform had been shut down temporarily to allow technicians to address the technical issues affecting the system.

According to Sifuna, the website had gone live on Friday, March 13, and quickly attracted significant engagement from Kenyans eager to register on the platform.

Sifuna thanked supporters for the strong response to the Linda Mwananchi platform, noting that thousands of Kenyans had already registered shortly after the website went live.

However, he revealed that the platform also experienced numerous suspected malicious cyber attacks soon after its launch.

According to the Nairobi Senator, the development team opted to temporarily take the website offline in order to address the technical issues, strengthen the system, and incorporate feedback from users on how the platform could be improved.

Despite the early enthusiasm, the project quickly sparked debate online after concerns were raised about data privacy.

Screenshots circulating on social media appeared to show personal information allegedly linked to individuals who had signed up on the site.

The images seemed to display details such as names, phone numbers, and email addresses, prompting questions from some users about whether the platform had adequate safeguards in place to protect personal data.

Nevertheless, the Linda Mwananchi initiative continued to attract significant attention, with supporters describing it as a platform aimed at mobilising citizens around governance and accountability issues.
