He stated that the State has a constitutional obligation to ensure the safety and protection of every individual placed in police custody.
The LSK went on to stress that detention facilities should never become places where unexplained deaths occur, urging authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in the matter.
It intensified calls for transparency and accountability following the death of 24-year-old Brian Njung’e while in custody at Kiambu Police Station.
The society raised concern over reports that Brian’s family was allegedly denied access to him shortly before they received news of his death, saying the claims further deepened suspicion surrounding the incident.
According to Kanjama, the reported events surrounding the student’s detention and subsequent death make it necessary for authorities to publicly disclose all facts and circumstances linked to the case.
The society further revealed that it had begun engaging Brian’s family with the aim of providing legal support as they seek justice over the matter.
LSK also announced plans to push for a mandatory public inquest into the death, maintaining that custodial deaths should never be normalised and warning against any attempts to evade administrative accountability.
