After being bedridden for 20 years due to a severe spinal condition, 52-year-old Ibrahim Mungai from Kiambu County is walking again, thanks to the expertise of medical specialists at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
In a statement, KNH detailed how its team successfully restored Mungai’s mobility, overcoming the challenges posed by tuberculosis of the spine that had left him immobile for two decades.
The hospital went on to explain that Mungai’s condition worsened over the years, leading to severe infections and kidney complications that threatened his life.

However, the hospital’s medical team mounted an intensive recovery plan that eventually pulled Mungai back from the brink.
KNH attributed the success to a multidisciplinary approach that combined surgery with comprehensive rehabilitation and holistic care.
Today, Ibrahim Mungai has regained significant mobility and independence, achieving a recovery that was once considered unattainable.
Speaking about his renewed lease on life, Ibrahim Mungai expressed immense gratitude and optimism for the future, saying he hopes to return to his community and resume his cobbler business.
This comes just weeks after a team of surgeons at the same hospital successfully performed an operation to remove over 20 kilograms of breast tissue from a 17-year-old girl diagnosed with gigantomastia.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 23, the hospital noted that the surgery took 11 hours to complete and is considered one of the most extensive procedures of its kind worldwide.
