“The CT scan of the head confirmed that a bullet had struck the left side of his head. The patient was then prepared for emergency surgery to mitigate his condition. The patient was wheeled into theatre where a complex and delicate surgery was conducted by a multidisciplinary team under the leadership of our neurosurgeon. The procedure lasted 2 hours. During the procedure, an object believed to be a bullet was removed.”

The doctor also noted that Kariuki suffered a head injury as the bullet was found in his skull. It was established that there was some damage to his brain.

Moreover, preliminary reports by the hospital show that the vendor was most likely hit by a rubber bullet.

KNH further detailed that it has received 16 patients after the Tuesday demonstrations, with some of the patients having bullet wounds.

“The injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to blunt trauma. Of these, 7 patients were admitted for further management, 9 were treated and discharged, 2 have undergone surgery, and 4 more are scheduled for surgical procedures today,” read the statement in part.
