The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has initiated disciplinary proceedings following the death of a man who was allegedly assaulted by its officers after his arrest in Kangaita, Kirinyaga County.
The deceased, identified as David Munene, was reportedly apprehended by forest officers on suspicion of illegally cutting forest produce in Kangaita.
Reports indicate that Munene was allegedly beaten during the arrest before being taken to Kerugoya Police Station.

While appearing in court the next day, he is said to have raised his hands and informed the magistrate that he had been struck on the head and was experiencing severe pain.
The court subsequently directed that he receive immediate medical attention.
A head scan conducted at Kerugoya Level 5 Hospital revealed internal bleeding.
However, due to the unavailability of ICU space, his family transferred him to Embu Level 5 Hospital for specialized care.
Munene died the following day, Wednesday, April 8, according to his family.
A post-mortem examination later confirmed that he succumbed to multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
In a statement issued on Thursday, April 16, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) said disciplinary action had been taken against two rangers linked to the incident at Kangaita Forest Station in Kirinyaga County.
KFS said the incident contravenes its standards, stressing that officers must uphold human rights and are accountable for their actions.
The agency urged the public to report similar cases as investigations continue.
The incident follows recent criticism of KFS over alleged misuse of firearms and claims of illegal logging involving some rangers.
