Kenya’s First Zero-Tariff Tea Export Lands in China

Kenya has marked a significant milestone in its trade relations with China following the arrival of the first export shipment under China’s zero-tariff treatment programme for 53 African countries at Xiamen Port in Fujian Province.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 12, the Ministry of Trade noted that the development is expected to open new opportunities for Kenyan exporters accessing the Chinese market.

The consignment, shipped by Quanzhou Danong Tea Import and Export Company Limited, consisted of Kenyan tea and formed part of the first batch exported under the new trade arrangement.

China’s zero-tariff policy, which took effect earlier this month, is aimed at improving market access for African goods and enhancing competitiveness by eliminating import duties.

Previously, Kenyan tea exports to China were subject to tariffs, which increased the cost of entry into the market and limited trade volumes.

The initiative is also viewed as an important step toward addressing the long-standing trade imbalance between Kenya and China, where imports from China have consistently exceeded Kenya’s exports over the years.

China remains one of Kenya’s key trading partners, with bilateral trade heavily skewed in favour of Chinese imports. Kenyan exports to China have remained relatively modest compared to the value of goods imported from the Asian giant.

Trade Principal Secretary Regina Ombam noted that the successful shipment reflects the strengthening economic partnership between the two countries and highlights Kenya’s growing role as a strategic trade and investment hub in Africa.

She added that the new trade arrangement presents expanded opportunities for Kenyan farmers, manufacturers, and exporters to access and compete in one of the world’s largest consumer markets, boosting prospects for increased export earnings and market diversification.
