Kenyan-Registered Ship Seized in Tanzania, Kenya Maritime Authority Confirms

A Kenyan shipping vessel has been detained in Tanzania by allegedly maritime authorities from the East African nation.

This might spark diplomatic concern between the two countries following reports of the detention by Tanzanian authorities over unclear reasons.

However, the government through the Kenya Maritime Authorities, has announced that it has commenced an investigation and reached out to diplomatic counterparts as well as security agencies.

The move will enable them to establish the circumstances surrounding the detention of the M/V Sea Mfalme.

“The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) acknowledges reports regarding the detention of a Kenyan-flagged vessel, M/V SEA MFALME, in the United Republic of Tanzania,” the statement from the authority read.

“The matter is currently under review, with the Authority working closely with relevant Government agencies and counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania to verify the circumstances and facilitate appropriate follow-up actions”, KMA added.

So far, the exact reason for the vessel’s detention has not been officially disclosed.

According to reports, maritime authorities in such cases typically act when there are suspected regulatory breaches, unresolved port obligations, or security-related concerns involving vessels operating in their waters.

Further reports indicate that ships can be detained for issues such as alleged smuggling, trafficking, illegal fishing, documentation gaps, or breaches of safety and port regulations, pending investigations or clearance.
