The Kenya Red Cross has issued fresh safety guidelines urging residents to stay alert and take precautions as the country continues to experience heavy rainfall.
In a statement shared on Saturday, March 7, 2026, the Kenya Red Cross saidutioned that even small amounts of moving water can be dangerous, especially in urban areas where drainage systems are easily overwhelmed.
Among the advisory shared is to evacuate immediately to elevated areas in case of flooding.
The organisation also warned residents to switch off electricity in flooded houses to avoid electrocution.
“Switch off electricity at the main switch if the house is flooded,” the statement read.
According to Kenya Red Cross, people often underestimate the power of floodwaters as what may look as a little moving water can quickly turn into danger.
“Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down,” the organisation cautioned.
“Avoid parking, driving or conducting activities along streams or rivers during floods. One foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away,” the agency added.
Kenya Red Cross futher advised using a stick to test the depth of water and avoiding muddy areas where power lines may have fallen.
“Avoid downed power lines and muddy waters where power lines may have fallen. In flooded areas, use a stick to test depth. Do not drive over a bridge that is flooded”.
The advisory comes amid heavy rainfall being experienced in Nairobi and several counties across Kenya.
So far, the Kenya Red Cross has revealed that it has rescued twenty people in Nairobi along Kiriyanga road and has moved them to safety.
“As part of the flood response in Nairobi, Kenya Red Cross first responders rescued 20 people stranded along Kirinyaga Road and moved them to safety.Teams continue to monitor the situation and provide support to those affected”, the organisation stated.
