Kenya Railways to Launch Mombasa Commuter Rail Service on September 17

The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has recently announced that the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service will be commissioned on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

In a notice on September 15, Kenya Railways disclosed that President Ruto will preside over the launch.

The notice comes days after Kenya Railways announced the completion of the construction works.

The Ksh4.2 billion project involved building modern passenger stations in Mombasa town and Miritini, constructing a 2.3-kilometre railway bridge over Makupa Creek, and rehabilitating 16.6 kilometres of the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) line.

The new service is expected to ease travel by linking seamlessly with the Madaraka Express Passenger Service to Nairobi, while also serving residents of Shimanzi, Mazeras, Changamwe, and other nearby communities in their daily commutes.

Kenya Railways projects the system will handle about 4,000 passengers daily.

It also introduces convenient options such as “Park and Ride,” allowing customers to leave their vehicles and board the train, and “Drop and Ride,” which lets public service vehicles drop off or collect commuters.
