KeNHA Orders Eviction of Roadside Traders on Kangundo Road Stretch

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has directed traders and other occupants operating unlawfully along the Kamulu-Joska-Malaa-Tala-Kangundo Road to vacate and remove all unauthorised structures.

In a notice, the authority warned that all roadside traders, business owners, and individuals occupying road reserve land without authorisation must clear the affected areas within 30 days.

According to the notice, some of the key estates to be affected by the notice include Kamulu, Joska, Malaa, Kantafu, Nguluni, Tala, Kangundo Town, Koma Hill, Stage 26 area, Muthwani and Kwa Ndege.

The directive targets unauthorised developments that have encroached on the road reserve along the busy transport corridor connecting parts of Machakos County and Nairobi’s eastern outskirts.

KeNHA noted that unlawful occupation of road reserves is an offence under the Kenya Roads Act of 2007, emphasising that the move is aimed at facilitating infrastructure improvements along the busy road.

The authority revealed that the planned works include service road improvements, construction of bus bays, and rehabilitation of drainage systems.

“The Project forms part of the ongoing Performance-Based maintenance and safety enhancement of this said Road, aimed at improving safety, visibility, and decongestion to improve traffic flow,” KeNHA stated.

“All affected traders and occupants are therefore required to remove their goods, structures, and any other encroachments from the road reserve within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice,” it added.

KeNHA further warned that any structures, goods, or encroachments remaining on the road reserve after the expiry of the notice period on June 29, 2026, will be removed without further reference to the owners.

It added that the demolition and clearance exercise will be conducted in accordance with existing laws governing the protection and management of road reserves.
