Karua Proposes 3 Solutions to Tackle CBC Brain Fog

Martha Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party, on Wednesday, April 29, предложed three solutions to address concerns over “brain fog” among pupils under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Citing findings that 75 percent of Grade 3 learners struggle with basic mathematics and English, Karua referenced the education reforms implemented during the tenure of Mwai Kibaki, which significantly improved access and quality in the sector.

She called on the government to prioritise teachers’ welfare, stressing the need for timely and adequate remuneration, as well as proper training and provision of essential teaching resources to enhance performance in classrooms.

Karua also urged the administration of William Ruto and the Ministry of Education to invest more in improving learning conditions for pupils across the country, arguing that better infrastructure and support systems are key to addressing current challenges in the CBC system.

The opposition leader called on the government to invest in proper educational infrastructure, including well-constructed classrooms, adequate desks, and learning materials, while also tackling corruption in the sector to ensure education funds reach schools.

She emphasised the need for accountability at both national and county levels, noting that effective use of allocated resources is critical to improving learning outcomes.

Karua, who served in the government of Mwai Kibaki, underscored the role of education as a key equaliser, capable of giving all learners a fair chance regardless of their background.

Her remarks follow a report by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), which showed that only 44 percent of Grade 3 learners met the minimum benchmark in English literacy, while just 26.8 percent achieved expected levels in foundational numeracy.
