Ukombozi Alliance Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has clarified the coalition’s leadership structure following former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s resignation as Chair of the Council.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, Kalonzo confirmed that the coalition had received Kenyatta’s resignation letter dated Monday, October 5, in which the former President stepped down from his leadership position with immediate effect.
Kalonzo thanked Kenyatta for his leadership and clarified that his resignation did not amount to an exit from the coalition or the wider political partnership.

He said Kenyatta had indicated that he remained committed to the political journey they had shared and had encouraged the coalition to remain united around its principles.
Kalonzo said the coalition had accepted Kenyatta’s call for an inclusive political platform focused on democratic governance, the rule of law and unity.
He further noted that Kenyatta would remain a committed member of the Azimio political family and could continue offering counsel to the coalition when required.
Kalonzo also disclosed that the coalition would invite Kenyatta for an official visit, during which a formal handover ceremony would be conducted.
The Ukombozi Alliance leader moved to address questions surrounding the coalition’s leadership structure, particularly whether Kenyatta’s resignation would affect his position as Party Leader.
He explained that the Chair of Council and Party Leader are separate offices with distinct responsibilities.
According to Kalonzo, the Chair of Council serves at the council level, providing counsel, convening members and offering strategic guidance, while the Party Leader serves as the political and executive head of the party.
The Party Leader is responsible for representing the party, overseeing its day-to-day operations, engaging with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and other institutions, and remaining accountable to party members.
Kalonzo maintained that his position as Party Leader remained unchanged following Kenyatta’s resignation, insisting that the coalition had no leadership vacuum and that its political direction and programmes remained intact.
He also announced that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties had reserved The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) as the coalition’s new name.
Kalonzo said the reservation had resolved the challenge that had previously surrounded the coalition’s proposed name.
The party is now undertaking the remaining compliance requirements before completing the formal process, with Kalonzo promising further updates as the process progresses.
