Former Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has called on Kenyan advocates to actively protect democracy, following a landmark High Court ruling on political defections.
Speaking at the Law Society of Kenya’s Lower Eastern Advocates Forum at Sisu Hotel in Machakos County on December 6, 2025, Kalonzo described the judgment as a defining moment for the nation, saying it sent a clear message that political betrayal is unacceptable and helped restore public confidence in multiparty democracy.

The ruling, delivered by Justices Ngaah, Chigiti, and Mugambi, concerned Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo and his Deputy Governor, who defected from the Jubilee Party to UDA shortly after taking office in 2023.
Kalonzo emphasized that the decision reaffirmed the principle that the will of the people is sacred and cannot be treated as a commodity.
Despite the High Court victory, opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka warned of ongoing threats to Kenya’s democracy, including election misconduct and violence, citing at least 15 deaths in Kasipul during the November 27 by-elections.
He urged the DPP to act promptly on inquiries, cautioning that failure to do so could force citizens to pursue private prosecutions.
Kalonzo also called on advocates to go beyond the courtroom, emphasizing the need for pro bono work to ensure Kenyans can access their constitutional rights.
The leader urged lawyers to be consistent and principled in their court and online conduct, warning that the internet never forgets.
