Kakamega Family Faces Ksh.1.5 million Bill Over Burial Dispute

The family of Chief Augustine Odongo has suffered a huge blow just days after they laid him to rest.

During the burial, dispute arose between political sides over the weekend which led to some of the hired equipment’s being damaged.

In a letter dated 10th February 2025, the event company which was hired to plan the ceremony issued a demand letter seeking for compensation of over 1.5 million for the damages.

The company also accused the family of failing to ensure there was sufficient security at the event which was attended by notable names such as Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and former sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa.

Among the equipment’s reportedly damaged during the chaos included eight LED screens worth Ksh640,000, four speakers worth Ksh320,000, a microphone valued at Ksh150,000 and the infamous VIP red chairs totaling Ksh160,000.

The company stated if the demands weren’t met within the next 14 days, then they would take legal action against the family to recover its losses.

The demand came after the family had returned all the contributions made by former CS sports and the area MP.

Apart from that, several were injured during the chaos including a police officer.

The chief’s son condemned the act of the politicians who allegedly knew his father very well for bringing chaos in his father’s funeral instead of granting him the respect he deserved.

This caused the deceased’s wife to lose a chance to pay her tribute to her husband.
