The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has condemned the arrest of journalist Peter Mwita Maseke.
They are now calling for him to be released on free bond.
According to reports, Mwita was detained by police in connection with information he reportedly shared on WhatsApp regarding criminal gangs operating in the Kisauni area of Mombasa County.
Reports indicate that he had been summoned to record a statement on December 30, 2025, and was subsequently arrested on December 31.
According to the Council, the arrest is an attempt to intimidate journalists and silence whistleblowers.
The Council also cautioned that such actions push journalists into self-censorship and infringe on the constitutional rights of Kenyans, including the right to bail.
They further reminded authorities to protect freedom of expression and freedom of the media, which are essential in a democratic society.
