Joho Issues Fireworks Guidelines Ahead of Diwali Celebrations

Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has issued guidelines governing fireworks displays during the Diwali and Hindu New Year celebrations scheduled for November 6 to 8, 2026.

In a public notice on Tuesday, November 3, Joho directed organisers to comply with the Explosives Act, Cap 115, and obtain the necessary permits from the State Department for Mining or County Mining Offices.

The CS said fireworks should only be conducted at authorised venues, including hotels, clubs, temples, sports grounds and school compounds, between 7 pm and 11 pm.

He further limited display shells to a maximum of four inches in urban and built-up areas unless an Inspector of Explosives grants an exemption.

Joho also directed that only qualified, experienced and sober individuals handle aerial fireworks.

Additionally, he warned dealers against selling fireworks to children below 13 years and restricted the sale of aerial display fireworks, including rockets, Roman candles and shells, to individuals with valid permits.

The CS wished the Hindu community a happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year.

Diwali, popularly known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindus worldwide to mark the triumph of good over evil and is traditionally observed through prayers, family gatherings and fireworks displays.
