Real Betis came from behind to defeat Real Madrid 2-1, with Isco assisting and later scoring the winning goal against his former club.
The visitors, currently in second place in La Liga, took the lead when Kylian Mbappe passed to Ferland Mendy, who squared the ball to Brahim Diaz, allowing him to slot it into an empty net from close range.
Madrid had a couple of opportunities to extend their lead before Johnny Cardoso equalized with a header in the 34th minute from Isco’s corner kick.
Isco, who was captain for Betis in this match against the club where he spent nine years, then converted a penalty in the 54th minute after Antonio Rudiger fouled Jesus Rodriguez in the box.
Betis nearly added a third goal when Cucho Hernandez shot wide after receiving a pass from Manchester United loanee Antony, who was eligible to play following a successful appeal against his red card from the previous week.
Managed by former Madrid and Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, Betis climbed to sixth place in the La Liga table and deserved their victory, recording 18 shots compared to Madrid’s nine.
