Husband of Late Gospel Singer Osinachi Nwachukwu Sentenced to Death

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has sentenced the husband of the late Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi to death by hanging.

The husband, Peter Nwachukwu, was convicted after he was found guilty of culpable homicide.

In his trial in 2022, Peter had claimed that he was being punished for something he didn’t do, as his late wife died from lung cancer.

Conversely, the court found that the prosecution had met the legal standard required to prove culpable homicide.

However, even after pleading not guilty, Peter was still convicted based on the compelling evidence presented by the prosecution.

Among the 23 charges that had been brought forward against Peter were spousal battery, criminal intimidation, and child cruelty, among others.

There were also testimonies from 17 witnesses, two of the couple’s children and 25 documentary exhibits.

The ruling delivered by Justice Nwosu-Iheme on Monday, April 28, 2025, found Peter guilty and not only did he get a death sentence by hanging but also two years on several charges, six months for one count and financial penalties for lesser offences.

Osinachi’s death had sparked tension among many, even outside Nigeria, since her gospel music left a deep mark on people’s hearts across Africa.
