Highlights From Sakaja’s Meeting With Senate Officials

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Tuesday, March 31, met with Senate leadership and members of the County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC), ending hours of uncertainty after police had earlier been searching for him over his failure to attend a previous session.

Sakaja personally drove himself to Parliament to demonstrate good faith and a willingness to cooperate with Senate committees.

Speaking after the meeting, Sakaja called for dialogue to resolve the ongoing dispute between the Council of Governors (CoG) and the Senate.

He explained that his earlier absence from CPAC followed guidance from the CoG, which had raised concerns about alleged intimidation and extortion involving some committee members.

Sakaja noted that he has appeared before these committees multiple times in the past year and has responded to audit queries dating back to 2015, including those concerning his predecessors.

The county boss went on to state that the standoff extends beyond Nairobi, with several governors summoned by the same committee.

Many chose not to attend, while those who did refrained from engaging on substantive matters in solidarity with the Council of Governors’ position.

He revealed that he has been in communication with both Senate and CoG leadership in an effort to ease tensions and find a way forward.

Sakaja also expressed concern over what he described as attempts to single him out, saying the situation had been unnecessarily dramatized.

The governor affirmed that he remains willing to appear before the committee once the issues between the two institutions are resolved.
