Heavy Traffic on Thika Road After Lorry Rams Bus

Several people sustained injuries following a road accident involving a passenger bus and a canter along Thika Road on Monday, February 23.

Preliminary information indicates the collision occurred near the Safari Park Hotel on the Nairobi-bound carriageway, triggering significant traffic congestion on the busy highway.

Images and footage shared online showed the bus overturned on its side, while the canter had veered off the road and crashed into a guardrail, pointing to a possible failed overtaking manoeuvre.

By the time of publication, no fatalities had been confirmed.

However, the situation at the scene remained chaotic, compounded by rainfall and crowds of onlookers gathering near the wreckage.

Witnesses disclosed that the crash paralysed movement on both sides of Thika Road, causing heavy congestion on lanes heading toward both Thika and the Nairobi CBD.

Police officers and emergency response teams were deployed to the scene to manage traffic flow and coordinate the removal of the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

The accident occurred amid ongoing heavy rains across the country, conditions that heighten the likelihood of road crashes due to slippery surfaces and poor visibility.

A day earlier, the Kenya Meteorological Department had warned that Kiambu County and Nairobi were among areas expected to receive intense rainfall within 24 hours.

In an advisory issued on Sunday, the department further indicated that the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Central Highlands and South East Lowlands could record rainfall exceeding 50mm between 9am Sunday, February 22, and 9am Monday, February 23.
