The Principal Secretary for Public Health Mary Muthoni has confirmed that the mysterious illness which emerged in Kisii County is caused by water contamination.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 4 2025, the Ministry of Health also confirmed that the mysterious illness is a result of water contamination.
“PS Muthoni says that tests confirmed the presence of faecal matter in a community well, making it the likely source of the outbreak. Those affected have experienced high fever, diarrhoea and dizziness,” the statement read.
The Ministry of Health had sent a team of medical experts to investigate the outbreak of the disease, which had become a major concern in the country.
The WHO also joined in the search for the cause of the illness.
The health official visited the affected areas and collected water samples for testing.
It was then that it was discovered that the illness was caused by contaminated water.
Having established the source of the outbreak, Muthoni urged members of the affected community to abstain from using the tap or water or source of water and use alternative places to avoid being admitted to the hospital and maintain high level of hygiene.
She mentioned that the samples collected will undergo further investigation to officially confirm whether the water is contaminated and unfit for human consumption.
