Health Crisis Triggers Impeachment Threat Against Kiambu Governor

A section of Kiambu Members of County Assembly (MCAs) has threatened to impeach Governor Kimani Wamatangi, accusing him of failing to address a deepening health crisis in the county.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 14, the MCAs criticized the governor for his inability to resolve a prolonged standoff with health workers, which has crippled operations in most public health facilities.

They further faulted Wamatangi for trading verbal barbs with the workers instead of pursuing constructive dialogue, arguing that his confrontational approach has only worsened the situation and hurt service delivery to residents.

Health workers in Kiambu County have been on strike for over three months, severely disrupting healthcare services across the region.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi, however, has downplayed the situation, dismissing reports of a full-blown crisis.

He disputed claims that 136 infants had died in public hospitals during the strike, accusing the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) of fabricating figures to tarnish his administration’s image.

Wamatangi further claimed that the ongoing crisis was politically motivated, arguing that his opponents were using the issue to undermine his leadership.

Kiambu County Chief Officer for Health Patrick Nyagah also dismissed reports of a total shutdown, insisting that hospitals remained operational despite the standoff with KMPDU.

The stalemate has drawn the attention of Members of Parliament, who have proposed transferring the county’s health services to the national government.

Meanwhile, several lobby groups have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the county to resolve the crisis or face a petition seeking its dissolution.

This marks the second time Governor Wamatangi has faced impeachment threats, with the first attempt being dropped after negotiations between his office and Members of the County Assembly.
