Hawkers in Nairobi have declared protests against CBD’s ban that was lifted by Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Gachagua had issued a warning against the hawkers on January 6th, 2025, not to hawk within Nairobi CBD and further directed them to sell in the backstreets of the town and lanes within the CBD.
The new directive also required the hawkers to hawk only from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm from Monday to Friday.

With the new regulations, the hawkers’ association vows to march to city hall to demonstrate against the new regulations, stipulating the right to conduct businesses without restrictions.
They have argued that they have families and cannot be expected to leave when they have responsibilities.
However, the business community is also against arguing that the overcrowding of hawkers discourages their customers from entering CBD.
While stating their argument, they also emphasized that they are not against the hawkers but rather wants their designated business spaces adding that they pay taxes to operate regularly.
