Haitian Airport Closed After Gangs Fire at An Airplane

Haiti has announced the closure of its airport.

The closure of the airport was announced on 11th November 2024 after an attack on an US airline.

The plane which about to land was shot at by suspected gangs at Toussaint-Louverture International Airport which prompted the authorities to close down the airport.

The incident came a day after Interim Prime Minister Gary Conille was fired and replaced by businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aime.

Conille was fired months after he held talks with President William Ruto.

The flight was from Florida but got diverted to Dominican Republic where one of the flight attendants succumbed injuries according to the airline.

According to the US federal Aviation Administration, the plane landed safely.

The strike came after the Kenya-led MMS announced that it had reclaimed the airport hence victory from the gangs which marked a major win as they aimed to return the country back to normal.

There are ongoing demolitions targeting a number of buildings around the airport. The buildings had been home to armed gang members who used to carry out attacks with the aim of stopping operations in the main international airport in Haiti.

Commander Godfrey Otunge has said on October 29th.

Based on the attacks on 11th November, the MMS mission said in a statement that it will continue to support the Haiti National Police in their fight against the gangs.
