Over 200 people were hospitalized in Kisii following an unidentified illness.
Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni revealed that an emergency team has been sent to assess and respond to the situation.
The disease was first detected three weeks ago and has already spread to three villages. Among the symptoms reported include severe diarrhoea with bloody stools, fever and intense headaches.
Speaking at an AIPCA church event, Muthoni assured that the Ministry has intensified surveillance and screening efforts to identify the source of the illness.

“Health is a devolved function, but when something like this happens, we always send our officers from the national government, especially those from the surveillance department, to ensure that we conduct comprehensive surveillance and determine the cause of the disease”, Muthoni said.
“We have already sent our officers on the ground, and they are working closely with the county government to analyse the samples they are collecting”, the PS added.
They further stated that the government will be able to identify the appropriate course of action and medication once it’s fully informed.
She, therefore, urged the country to remain calm as the situation is under control and the government is keenly monitoring the situation.
