Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has defended her administration’s decision to provide meals for county revenue collectors.
The Governor acknowledged that a Ksh 4 million allocation had been budgeted for the annual expense.
According to Governor Waiguru, the money was being used to provide meals for the officials who were required to work extra hours.

Waiguru moreover noted that it was crucial to compensate the employees given that they were only earning Ksh15,000.
She also reiterated that the meals were fair given the circumstances of the work, adding that she had no apologies to make.
“That Ksh4 million they were talking about is the budget for a whole year. These revenue collectors, we only pay them Ksh15,000 and I tell them to help me collect revenue so that we reach Ksh700 million. They have to be at the market at 4 am when lorries come to offload goods. They are there to collect taxes. Now, you are telling me that I should not give them a supplement to have breakfast. I have no apologies to make about that because I want them to work,” she explained.
While appearing before the Senate Public Accounts Committee, Wiguru was questioned about the Ksh 4 million budgetary allocation.
The senate wondered why the county was still having workers to enforce revenue collection when the process was digitised.
