Governor Sakaja Tightens Regulations, Bans Hawking In Nairobi CBD

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has issued notice toward hawkers in Nairobi CBD.

The notice dated 6th January 2025 stated that all hawkers in Nairobi CBD would not be allowed to hawk around there.

The Governor issued a new directive for them to hawk along the backstreets and lanes.

Nairobi City County Government hereby gives notice to all hawkers in the Central Business District that hawking of merchandise will only be allowed on backstreets and lanes from Monday to Saturday from 4PM to 10PM. 

The notice stated.

No hawkers would also be allowed on the main streets and road i.e. Moi Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Keneth Matiba Road, Latema road, Ronald Ngala Street, Mfangano street, Harakati road and River Road.

Governor Sakaja also stated that all walkways within the Central Business District are strictly for pedestrians and not trading.

The general public is asked to take not that anyone contravening this notice will be prosecuted within the Nairobi City County Government by law. 

The notice further stated.

The order followed a motion that was tabled in November 2024 by the County Assembly requiring Sakaja’s administration to come up with pop-up market in the back lanes and register traders.

There was also a motion to ease congestion in Nairobi CBD in September 2024.
