The government has announced a compensation and support package of Ksh200,000 for each family that lost a loved one in the Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire tragedy.
According to Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, the assistance will be extended to all bereaved families, including that of a parent who also died while travelling to pick up her child from the school.
The government said the move is part of ongoing efforts to support victims and ease the financial burden caused by the tragedy.

Authorities further confirmed that injured students were airlifted from St Joseph Hospital in Gilgil to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised treatment, with the state committing to cover all medical expenses incurred in both facilities.
In addition to the cash support and medical cover, the government will also cater for funeral-related costs, including mortuary fees, coffins, and transportation of the deceased to their respective homes.
Plans are also underway for a requiem mass to be held at Utumishi Girls Academy, with the date to be communicated later.
A multi-agency team led by the National Disaster Operations Centre continues to coordinate relief efforts and oversee implementation of the support measures.
The fire broke out on the night of Thursday, May 28, at around 12:45 am, engulfing a dormitory at the school in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
The incident claimed the lives of 16 students and left 79 others injured, triggering a nationwide response and renewed concerns over school safety.
In the aftermath, investigations led to the arrest and court appearance of nine students suspected to be linked to the incident.
A Naivasha court ordered them to remain in custody at the Nakuru Children’s Remand Home for 21 days as investigations continue, citing the seriousness of the case and potential interference with witnesses.
Authorities are still probing the incident, with investigators pursuing possible charges including murder and arson as the country continues to mourn the lives lost.
