Google Rolls Out New Android Features Aimed at Reducing Phone Theft

Google has announced android theft-protection features designed to reduce the value of stolen Android smartphones while limiting the ability to access sensitive data.

The new development was announced on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, to build on protections which were introduced in 2024, representing a broader push to make Android devicetos harder to compromise before and after theft.

According to reports, the updates are stronger authentication safeguards which are available to devices running Android 16 or higher.

One of the more notable changes is expanded control over Failed Authentication Lock feature which automatically locks a device after repeated unsuccessful login attempts.

There will also be a Remote Lock – a recovery tool which allows users to secure a lost or stolen phone from a web browser.

All these protections apply broadly across Android 10 and newer devices, extending advanced security to millions of existing phones instead of limiting the feature to the latest models.
