Gachagua Defends ‘One-Term’ Chant Amid Ruto Criticism

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pushed back against President Ruto’s criticism that the opposition is fixated on the “one-term” slogan, saying it reflects the people’s frustrations rather than a political strategy.

Ruto has recently accused the opposition of lacking a development agenda and focusing solely on removing him from power.

He maintains that his rivals have yet to present a credible plan to steer the country forward, arguing that they are more focused on political rhetoric than offering tangible solutions for Kenyans.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, October 5, Gachagua responded to President William Ruto’s criticism, saying the “one-term” slogan is driven by the public, not politicians.

He explained that the phrase reflects growing frustration with the Kenya Kwanza administration, as many Kenyans view President Ruto as the cause of their hardships.

Gachagua said that when he coined the slogan, he was merely echoing sentiments expressed by citizens across the country.

As a student of literature, he added that he sought to capture public emotion in one phrase, which quickly spread because it resonated deeply with many.

In recent months, Gachagua has become a vocal critic of the government, using the “one-term” or “wantam” slogan as a rallying call for change.

The narrative, however, has drawn criticism from Ruto allies, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who urged the opposition to focus on offering concrete solutions.
