Gachagua Backs Uhuru Kenyatta as Criticism from Ruto Camp Intensifies

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has defended former President Uhuru Kenyatta amid renewed criticism from leaders allied to President William Ruto.

Speaking on Sunday, May 3, Gachagua said Uhuru, as a retired head of state and a Kenyan citizen, has the constitutional right to comment on national issues and associate with any political formation of his choice.

He urged the former president not to be intimidated by the criticism, assuring him of support and protection from his camp against what he termed unwarranted attacks.

Gachagua also directed his remarks at leaders within the Kenya Kwanza administration, calling on them to refrain from targeting Uhuru and to respect his position and rights.

The remarks come just days after Uhuru dismissed claims that leaving office should bar him from political engagement, maintaining that retirement does not strip him of his constitutional right to participate in national affairs.

Uhuru made the comments during a political gathering in Narok County, where he addressed attendees via a phone call facilitated by his brother, Muhoho Kenyatta.

He criticised what he described as double standards applied to his political involvement, noting that former leaders have historically remained active in public discourse without facing similar pressure.

In particular, Uhuru pointed to the late Daniel arap Moi, observing that he continued to engage in politics long after his presidency without being urged to step back.

The former Head of State reiterated that he has no intention of seeking elective office but remains an active member of the Jubilee Party, with the right to campaign for it.

He pointed to global precedents, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, noting that retired leaders often continue supporting their political parties without restriction.

Uhuru questioned why his own political engagement attracts criticism despite his awareness of national issues and continued interest in public affairs.

Turning to 2027 succession politics, he endorsed Fred Matiang’i, describing him as a capable and determined leader despite his relatively recent entry into elective politics.
