Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua, has attributed the shortage of passport books in the country to the diversion of e-Citizen funds.
Speaking from his Wamunyoro residence on Thursday, August 6, 2026, while hosting the Subukia Constituency, Nakuru County delegation, the former Deputy President claimed to have received intelligence from the Department of Immigration Services (DIS) on why thousands of Kenyans are stuck waiting.
According to Gachagua, applicants who booked their passports early have gone for over four months without receiving them.
“I received intelligence from the Immigration Department Offices, that, for four months, they have not been able to print new passports due to an extreme shortage of passport books,” he stated.
Gachagua alleged that the shortage stems from a lack of passport books, since the money set aside for printing was diverted elsewhere.
According to the former DP, the funds were instead used to bribe voters during the recently concluded Ol Kalou by-election.
“They told me that there is no money to print a single passport book because the money that comes in for e-Citizen was diverted to other things such as the Ol Kalou by-election,” Gachagua added.
Furthermore, to back his claims, Gachagua dared journalists to visit the Immigration Department at Nyayo House and see the situation firsthand.
