Gachagua Accuses IG Kanja of Enabling Violence, Demands His Exit

Former DP Rigathi Gachagua has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, accusing him of losing control of the National Police Service and enabling state-sponsored violence.

In a letter addressed to the police chief on Tuesday, November 25, Gachagua issued a sharp 15-point indictment outlining what he described as grave failures in the management of national security, with particular focus on the recent unrest in Narok town.

He argues that Kanja has lost command of the Police Service and should step down to allow more effective leadership.

The demand follows violent confrontations on Monday, November 24, during which Gachagua’s campaign rally in Narok town was disrupted by teargas and what he claims was coordinated state-sponsored violence.

Gachagua begins his letter by accusing the IG of persistent negligence, saying he has repeatedly raised concerns about state-sponsored violence, militia activity, and attacks against him and his supporters including alleged assassination attempts with no credible action taken.

He also accused Kanja and President Ruto of deploying militia, uniformed officers, and plainclothes operatives, including the Rapid Deployment Unit, to intimidate and disperse his supporters in Narok.

The letter comes after chaotic scenes in Narok on Monday, where Gachagua campaigning for DCP candidate Douglas Masikonde claimed that more than a thousand police officers had been deployed to block him from addressing residents.

He still managed to reach the venue, but moments after Masikonde began speaking, teargas was fired into the crowd, triggering panic and scattering supporters.
