“The National Police Service commiserates with the families, friends, and relatives of two persons who tragically lost their lives near Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, Embu County, yesterday, 14th April 2026. Any loss of life is something that the Service takes great exception to, as one life lost is one too many,” read the statement.

Nyaga said the protests over the poor state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital began peacefully before turning chaotic, with businesses vandalised and several bystanders injured.

He noted that police were deployed to restore order but faced resistance from individuals he described as criminal elements armed with crude weapons.

Investigations into the fatal shooting of the two protesters are underway, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) notified.

Nyaga urged members of the public with any information to report to the nearest police station or use the toll-free police lines, assuring that the Service remains committed to upholding the law with transparency and accountability while working closely with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

His remarks come after Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire spoke on the incident, linking the protests to public dissatisfaction over services at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.

Mbarire noted that health officials had already engaged stakeholders and begun implementing corrective measures, but despite these efforts, demonstrations still proceeded and later turned violent.

At the same time, Mbarire faulted security agencies for using excessive force, particularly live ammunition, against unarmed protesters.

She termed the response disproportionate and called for accountability, urging an independent investigation to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
