An examiner passed away on Monday, November 24, while marking the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) examinations at Machakos Girls High School.
According to a statement from Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO David Njengere, the examiner, Nicodemus Mutua Mutuku, served as a team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports paper.
KNEC noted that Mutuku had been actively carrying out his duties since the marking exercise began on November 7, 2025.

Njengere expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a significant blow to the marking team and the wider education fraternity.
Until his passing, Mutuku was a teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County.
Njengere described Mutuku as a highly experienced and dedicated educator whose contribution to national examinations had been invaluable.
He noted that Mutuku’s professionalism, consistency and commitment had earned him respect among colleagues and within the wider education sector.
According to KNEC, the loss of Mutuku has left a significant gap in the marking team and in the teaching community, reflecting on the impact he had made throughout his career.
The Council extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, friends and all who knew him, acknowledging the grief felt across the education fraternity following his sudden death.
