EPRA Under Scrutiny Ahead of April 14 Fuel Price Decision

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has warned against an increase in fuel prices by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in its April to May 2026 review.

In a statement on April 14, 2026, MAK noted that any upward adjustment could raise the cost of living.

This follows widespread unverified reports that EPRA might increase fuel prices across the three categories by at least Ksh5 for the next 30 days to May 14, 2026.

According to MAK, the timing of the review is critical as many Kenyan households and businesses continue to struggle with rising transport and commodity costs.

“The decision by EPRA on fuel prices comes at a time when Kenyans are already under severe economic strain. Any increase will only worsen the situation,” MAK stated.

The association noted that EPRA’s monthly price review process is typically influenced by global oil prices, exchange rates and local taxes, but argued that domestic policy decisions have long influenced pump prices.

They further argued that the current situation in the country presents the right opportunity for President William Ruto’s administration to restore the fuel subsidies that it removed when it took over governance.

“The removal of subsidies has exposed ordinary Kenyans to extreme price shocks that directly affect food, transport, and business operations. Good governance demands the formulation of policies that prioritise the welfare of citizens, rather than copying exploitative practices from countries that take advantage of their own people”, the association added.

MAK therefore called on EPRA to ensure that fuel prices are either reduced or, at the very least, maintained at current levels, to reflect global price trends and protect consumers.
