Eight Utumishi Girls Students to Undergo Mental Assessment Over School Fire

The Kibera High Court has ordered a mental assessment on eight students charged with murder following the Utumishi Girls Academy murder case.

While appearing virtually before Deputy Registrar Barbar Akinyi for the first mention of the case, the prosecution requested the court to order a mental assessment for all eight students at Mathare Mental Hospital.

According to reports, the assessment is to be conducted by a child psychiatrist, as well as an assessment by a Children’s Officer.

The prosecution also sought orders directing that protection and care files be opened for all the minors and that they continue being remanded at Kabete Children’s Home pending further court directions

Additionally , the court directed that the students be escorted to Mathare Mental Hospital on Monday, June 29, 2026, for mental assessment, with the resulting reports to be filed in court before the next mention date.

Furthermore, the court directed that children’s officers, guardians, and parents be present during the next court appearance and that each student be represented by legal counsel and physically produced in court.

The matter is set to be mentioned on July 1, 2026, before Lady Justice Diana Kavedza.
