Egypt Robbed a Quarter final spot by Argentina

Argentina came from behind to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash on Monday, with a late goal from Enzo Fernandez sealing their place in the quarter-finals as the Pharaohs were left protesting the decisive finish.

Egypt made a dream start to the encounter when Ibrahim found the back of the net in the 15th minute to hand the African side an early advantage. The goal unsettled the reigning world champions, who struggled to create clear-cut chances during much of the opening half as Egypt remained compact and disciplined defensively.

Argentina emerged stronger after the break and gradually took control of possession, but Egypt doubled their lead in the 67th minute through Ziko, putting the North Africans within touching distance of a famous victory over Lionel Scaloni’s side.

The South Americans, however, responded in emphatic fashion. Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute before captain Lionel Messi levelled the score four minutes later with a composed finish that reignited Argentina’s hopes of reaching the last eight.

With extra time looming, Argentina continued to pile pressure on the Egyptian defence. Their persistence paid off in the second minute of stoppage time when Enzo Fernández fired home the winner to complete a remarkable comeback and spark wild celebrations among the Argentine players and supporters.

The late goal, however, was met with frustration from Egypt, with players and fans questioning the circumstances surrounding the decisive moment.

Despite the protests, the goal stood, ending Egypt’s spirited World Cup campaign in heartbreaking fashion.

Argentina’s victory keeps alive their hopes of defending the FIFA World Cup title, with Messi once again playing a decisive role as the Albiceleste recovered from a two-goal deficit to avoid a shock elimination.

For Egypt, the defeat marks a painful end to an impressive tournament. The Pharaohs had matched the defending champions for long periods and looked set to produce one of the biggest upsets of the competition before Argentina’s late rally turned the contest on its head.

Argentina now advance to the quarter-finals, where they will continue their quest for back-to-back World Cup titles, while Egypt bow out with heads held high after pushing one of the tournament favourites to the limit.
