Egypt beat Australia on penalties to book FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Egypt held their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout to defeat Australia 4-2 after a 1-1 draw, securing their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Pharaohs recovered from a second-half setback before goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy produced crucial saves in the shootout, sending Egypt into the knockout stage after one of the most closely contested matches of the tournament.

Egypt made a confident start and were rewarded in the 13th minute when Ashour finished a well-worked attacking move to give the North Africans an early advantage. The goal allowed Egypt to control much of the first half as they frustrated Australia’s attempts to find an equaliser.

Australia improved significantly after the restart and drew level in the 55th minute through an unfortunate own goal by Hany, whose attempted clearance diverted into his own net under pressure.

Both teams created opportunities during the remainder of normal time and extra time, but disciplined defending and impressive goalkeeping at both ends ensured neither side could find a winning goal, sending the match to penalties.

In the shootout, Egypt displayed remarkable composure, converting four of their spot-kicks while Australia missed twice. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy emerged as the hero with two decisive saves that sent the Egyptian players and supporters into wild celebrations.

The victory highlighted Egypt’s growing confidence under pressure and extended their impressive World Cup campaign. Midfielder Ashour impressed throughout the contest, while Mohamed Salah’s leadership proved invaluable as the Pharaohs navigated one of their toughest tests of the tournament.

Australia bowed out after another spirited performance, having battled back into the match and pushed Egypt all the way to penalties. Despite the disappointment, the Socceroos earned praise for their resilience and commitment.

Egypt now advance to the Round of 16, where they will aim to continue their historic World Cup journey and become one of Africa’s strongest contenders in the knockout stages.
