Edward Muriuki Appointed as the New Acting Kenya Met Director

State Department of Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Festus Ng’eno has appointed Edward Maina Muriuki as the acting Director of Meteorological Services at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).

Edward Muriuki takes over from David Gikungu who retired on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Speaking after the appointment, the acting director described it as a significant milestone in his career as a meteorologist.

“This appointment marks a significant milestone in my career as a Meteorologist, and I look forward to enhancing the science of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kenya. I look forward to working closely with all our staff at KMD as well as our partners to improve weather and climate service delivery in the Country,” said Muriuki.

Mriuki joined the Meteorological Department in 1991 and has since served in various technical and administrative roles.

He was serving as the Deputy Director in charge of the Forecasting Services branch before his appointment as the acting Director of Meteorological Services.

Muriuki holds a Master of Science Degree in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, PG Diploma (Hydrology), and a Bachelor of Science (Maths and Meteorology), both from the University of Nairobi.
