The Ministry of Education has entered into a partnership with KCB Bank Kenya Limited to support the installation of solar energy systems and energy efficiency solutions in public universities across the country.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on Thursday by Higher Education and Research Principal Secretary Beatrice Muganda, who outlined the framework for financing, installing, and maintaining solar systems in university institutions.
The partnership will be informed by comprehensive energy audits and assessments of institutional power needs to determine the most suitable solutions for each facility.

Under the agreement, universities and KCB Bank will jointly conduct preliminary screening of facilities, guided by historical electricity consumption patterns, and carry out detailed site assessments to identify institutions that can benefit from the programme.
The initiative will be supported through Asset-Based Financing arrangements, enabling individual institutions to transition to clean energy in a structured and sustainable manner.
PS Muganda emphasized that the solarisation programme should extend beyond the mere installation of equipment.
She stressed the importance of actively involving students and university technicians in the process, ensuring they acquire practical skills needed to design, install, operate, maintain, and improve the systems.
The partnership is expected to create valuable opportunities for students and university staff to gain hands-on experience, rather than leaving them as passive observers while imported equipment is installed.
