The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended two police officers attached to Kenya Power’s Coast Regional Office over allegations of demanding a Ksh100,000 bribe from a resident they had accused of illegally connecting electricity.
According to the commissions the officers, a police inspector and a corporal, were arrested during an operation mounted by EACC on Monday, August 24.
The two allegedly demanded the money from a complainant in Bombolulu after accusing him of illegally connecting electricity to his residence.
Additionally, the officers allegedly offered to refrain from investigating the matter and taking legal action against the complainant if he paid the Ksh100,000.
Following the alleged demand, the complainant reported the matter to EACC, prompting the commission to begin investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged bribery attempt.
The investigations culminated in an operation on August 24, during which the two officers allegedly escorted the complainant to a bank along Moi Avenue to collect the money.
The officers were subsequently arrested opposite a bank in the area after allegedly receiving Ksh50,000 from the complainant as part of the demanded bribe
The two officers were taken to Central Police Station in Mombasa for processing before being released on Ksh30,000 cash bail pending further investigations.
