EACC Nabs Auditor Over Alleged Ksh400,000 Bribe From Contractor

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recently arrested an auditor attached to the North Rift Valley Development Water Agency over allegations of soliciting and receiving a Ksh400,000 bribe from a contractor in exchange for a favourable audit report.

In a statement, the anti-graft agency identified the suspect as Michael Maleya Omondi, who is employed as an auditor at the state agency.

According to EACC, the arrest followed a complaint from a contractor who alleged that the auditor had demanded money to influence the outcome of an ongoing audit exercise.

The Commission stated that the suspect allegedly sought the bribe in return for issuing a favourable audit report, a move that would have benefited the contractor during the assessment process.

Following the complaint, EACC investigators launched an operation to verify the allegations and gather evidence.

The operation was conducted in Eldoret, where investigators reportedly caught the suspect receiving Ksh400,000 from the complainant.

EACC officers then moved in and arrested him on the spot.

After the arrest, Omondi was taken to the EACC North Rift Regional Office, where he was processed and questioned by investigators.

He was later released on a cash bail of Ksh100,000 as investigations continue.

The Commission indicated that the case remains under active investigation and that further action will be taken once inquiries are completed.

The findings will guide the next legal steps, including possible prosecution.

EACC reiterated its commitment to combating corruption in public institutions and ensuring accountability in the management of public affairs.

The Commission moreover urged members of the public to continue reporting incidents of bribery and abuse of office, noting that public cooperation remains crucial in the fight against corruption and the promotion of integrity in government operations.
