The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended a Director of a security company over a Ksh5.4 million procurement fraud.
According to the commission, the suspect is a director at Gimo Security and Investigation Services Limited, a firm that had been contracted to provide security services at Keroka Technical Training Institute (KTTI).
“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a director of a security company in connection with an alleged procurement fraud involving a Ksh5.4 million security services contract at Keroka Technical Training Institute,โ stated EACC.
Investigators found that the company won a security contract worth Ksh257,000 per month, running across two financial years and totaling Ksh5,448,000.
EACC established that the problem started when the number of security guards deployed on the ground dropped, yet the company continued receiving full payments as though nothing had changed.
The development raised red flags, but investigators uncovered something even more troubling during the tendering process involving the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
A Tax Compliance Certificate that the company submitted to qualify for the tender was allegedly fake and could not be traced back to the KRA systems.
The EACC concluded its probe and forwarded the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), who approved the charges.
As a result, the suspect faced three counts, including procurement fraud, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.
He was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kisii on Monday, June 23, where he denied all the charges against him.
The suspect was released him on a cash bail of Ksh1 million or a bond of Ksh2 million, backed by two sureties of the same amount.
He was also ordered to surrender his passport to the court as the case proceeds, a standard condition meant to prevent him from leaving the country.
The matter is scheduled for mention on July 6.
