The EACC has apprehended a Kenya Revenue Authority official over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe to facilitate the clearance of tax arrears and issuance of a Tax Compliance Certificate.
According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the officer in Kisumu allegedly demanded Sh100,000 from a construction company to clear tax arrears reflected on the iTax system.
According to EACC, the tax arrears were initially indicated at Sh4.5 million before being revised to Sh142,230.
The complainant reportedly pleaded with the officer to reduce the amount of the alleged bribe.
EACC said the request was accepted, and the officer subsequently received Sh30,000.
This led to the arrest of the officer by EACC detectives.
The suspect was taken to Kisumu Central Police Station and was later released on a cash bail of Sh30,000, according to EACC.
The commission said the arrest formed part of its efforts to tackle alleged bribery and corruption at service delivery points.
EACC said it remains committed to taking action against individuals accused of abusing public office for personal gain.
