Dispute Erupts After Minister Says Besigye’s Wife Is Not Next of Kin

The government of Uganda has disclosed that incarcerated opposition leader Kizza Besigye suffered from diarrhoea, a claim that his wife, Winnie Byanyima, has rejected.

According to the government, Besigye only experienced a minor case of diarrhoea, which was treated by his personal doctor.

“Besigye was treated by his personal doctor, and he is going on with his life in prison as usual in prison. The statement by his wife that he is seriously sick and he is unable to access his personal doctor is not true,” the government said.

Hours later, Byanyima, Besigye’s wife replied in a social media post, saying that the latest statements by the government are inaccurate and are meant to cause public confusion.

“I am officially registered at Luzira Prison as the next of kin of Dr Kizza Besigye. I challenge the Uganda Prison Service to publicly deny this fact,” Byanyima said.

“His sisters are duly listed as carers permitted to bring food and personal items. This crude attempt to divide our family and manufacture confusion is despicable, dishonest, and beneath public office,” she added.
