DCI Arrests Ex-Priest Over Alleged Subversive Content on Facebook

A 44-year-old former Catholic priest has been arrested by detectives over allegations of sharing online content that allegedly called for the unlawful overthrow of the government.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, identified as Edwin Gathangi Waiguru, was picked up following intelligence-led investigations into posts shared on his Facebook page, Kinta Kinte II, which allegedly contained plans related to demonstrations and coordinated actions scheduled for June 2026.

According to investigators, the suspect was arrested in Kiambu County after being tracked by officers from the DCI Headquarters’ Operation Action Team, which linked him to the online content under investigation.

Authorities also stated that Waiguru is a former Roman Catholic priest who later left the church and joined another denomination.

He is further alleged to have continued wearing clerical attire and participating in church-related activities despite his departure from the Catholic priesthood.

Following the arrest, he was taken to DCI headquarters for processing and further investigation under laws relating to attempts to unlawfully overthrow a legitimate government.

The DCI also cautioned that while freedom of expression is protected, it does not extend to content that promotes violence or unconstitutional actions, urging the public to use online platforms responsibly and report suspicious activity.
