David Maraga Speaks Out on His Past Struggle With Alcohol

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has spoken candidly about his past struggle with alcohol and the journey that led him to quit drinking.

In an interview on Monday, November 24, with Oga Obbina, Maraga revealed that his drinking began while he was a student at Maranda High School.

He admitted that the habit continued through his time at Kisii High School, during university, and even after completing his training at the Kenya School of Law, while working as a lawyer in Nakuru.

Maraga explained that he was initially a disciplined student and a devoted member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

However, he said that the influence of peers at Maranda High School led him into drinking, a pattern that persisted for several years until he eventually decided to quit.

Maraga went on to recall that during his time at the land registry, heavy drinking once left him without money for fuel to drive back to Nakuru after weekend trips to Nairobi for document processing.

The former CJ also disclosed that he was involved in a minor accident after his car swerved and hit the side of the road.

He decided to quit drinking after an incident where he went out drinking and could not remember how he drove back home.

After quitting alcohol, the retired CJ embraced church and has stayed committed to sobriety.
